India Plans Mandatory Annual Drug Tests For Pilots After Air India Pilot Positive Test

Following an August 4 Air India flight incident where turbulence injured 24 passengers and the pilot in command tested positive twice for marijuana, the Government of India is considering mandatory annual drug testing for all commercial pilots. Current DGCA regulations require airlines to randomly test at least 10% of pilots annually, but proposed changes would expand coverage to 100%. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu stated that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation is consulting stakeholders to balance safety enforcement with operational impact. Following the incident, Air India and Air India Express screened around 5,000 pilots in a one-time exercise. The Federation of Indian Pilots has advocated increasing random testing coverage to 20 to 25% and introducing oral fluid testing alongside urine tests to minimize flight delays. Meanwhile, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau continues investigating the August 4 flight, with a preliminary report expected soon.
