Description

The proposed 11,200-MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh has triggered massive violent protests and severe social unrest as indigenous Adi communities fiercely oppose the mega-dam to protect their sacred Ane Siang river, ancestral lands, and fragile Himalayan ecosystem from permanent submergence. While the Indian central government pitches this massive water-storage dam as a vital strategic countermeasure against China’s aggressive upstream hydropower developments in Tibet, local residents have taken to the streets alleging a complete lack of transparent dialogue and consultation before the pre-feasibility surveys. The situation escalated dramatically with 12-hour bandhs, arson, and attacks on NHPC offices and local political leaders' residences, prompting authorities to deploy the Rapid Action Force and impose Section 163 restrictions across Pasighat and surrounding districts. Meanwhile, NHPC's heavy Rs 11-crore public relations push and pro-people CSR activities have miserably failed to win local trust, highlighting a deepening crisis where national security priorities collide head-on with local displacement fears and indigenous rights.

#SiangDam #ArunachalPradesh #NHPC #SiangUpperMultipurposeProject #ChinaHydropower #NorthEastIndia #AdiCommunity #IndiaChinaBorder

~HT.178~PR.512~ED.104~GR.506~VG.HM~
